Part 1: Take your cartoon warm ups back to the basics

I don't hate bees, and then I don't know why my heed took this route, but I added teeth to the leaves, then if the bee gets besides shut, it volition trigger the trap and the leaves will chomp down on the bee.

Cloud gazing

I besides did some other blob warm up exercise that I think is pretty common – where y'all just pigment splotches on a canvas and try to see what pops out at you, kind of similar a Rorschach test or deject gazing.

As I was still painting the blobs, I was already seeing images in the amorphous forms, and these are what resulted from it: a little rabbit, and a baby dragon!

That's a real term right? Anyway, this is a warm upward exercise in going with the flow, and learning to generate something when you don't have annihilation in mind

I picked up this blazon of "meditative" doodling from Tim Gula, featured on Proko's youtube aqueduct. In this action that he calls "automatic cartoon", you can larn to ease your mind and amend shape design.

For some reason, this method was really revolutionary to me – a whole new style to look at doodling to loosen the mind. I ended upward doing the activity a few times, and a bit differently from how Tim demonstrates in his video, but I recall the main meditative idea is the same.

I didn't like the first ane I did as much, simply I but kept going with it to see where it would take me.

It was especially useful when I was starting a new sketchbook and was really nervous about ruining the first few pages with something awful.

Starting a brand new sketchbook with purposely imperfect drawings takes a lot of the pressure away.

It's totally fine to do a petty flake of peeking when you're doing this, but to double-bank check your hand placement and make sure your Picasso faces are still really catastrophe up on the canvas and in the same general region.

Y'all'll see examples here of both consummate bullheaded contour and some sneak peeks, but for the virtually role, I try non to glance at the sail and just concentrate on observing the reference, trying to interpret the shapes that I'm seeing.

#eleven: draw your forte

For me, that's portraits and faces. They're something I love to practice all the fourth dimension. (I promise I didn't jinx myself for these to turn out badly!)

And so, hopefully, past now, you've started to warm up a bit and you're set up to showtime drawing for real! Well, non that whatever of the other exercises weren't real, but you go what I'm saying!

Once I'm feeling warmed upwards, I tend to kickoff in my condolement zone, which tin can exist good or bad depending on how you look at it… If the drawings plough out bad, and so it can exist disappointing to non come across my usual standard, but if it's expert, and so everybody's happy! Luckily, today was a decent mean solar day!

I'1000 not super well-versed in cat or animal anatomy, but I experience like I stare at Mike so ofttimes that I seem to have absorbed some understanding of his mechanics solely from constant observation, then these turned out a fiddling better than I anticipated. I was pleasantly surprised!

The very terminal kitty, however, put up a bit of a fight — you can tell I really struggled with the pose — but information technology wasn't fifty-fifty a moving picture of Mike, so… 🤷🏻‍♀️😜
